Hello students and parents,
My name is Kenny Rice and I am the counselor at the Powell County Academy (PCA). I am a life long resident of Powell County and a two time graduate of Morehead State University. I have worked for the school district for 20 years. The last 17 years have been here at PCA. I have two great children Jacey and Joplin.
Jacey, a Bellarmine University graduate and currently a surgical nurse in Louisville and Joplin a UK graduate who is currently the Americorps college coach at Powell County High School.
I am excited to announce that the Powell County School Board approved of a "Graduation" Track" for high school students who are well behind credit -wise or have other hardships in their lives. With this track, we can graduate a student who complete the state minimum 22 credits while attending PCA. For more information contact me at 606.663.3505 or at firstname.lastname@example.org
I am happy to announce that Frank Spencer, a PCHS graduate will be working part time at PCA, with the rest of his day teaching at PCMS. Mr. Spencer will be teaching our special education population.
We say goodbye and good luck to Mr. Jon Conley as he will be teaching full-time Social Studies at PCHS this year.
Mr. Jason McCord is back with us part-time this year teaching math classes and as needed electives.
The Powell County Academyoffers a chance for students who are not doing well in a regular school setting to work on catching up academically, learn acceptable behavior, or both. We serve grades 7-12 which offers unique challenges to both students and faculty. We teach core content subjects for middle school students, core content and all feasible electives for our high school students. In a typical year our four teachers are responsible for over 50 classes/subjects. I personally try to build a positive relationship with each student and parent so I can better understand the source of their specific difficulty in school and the community. I have an open door policy for both students and parents to help accomplish this goal.
