Powell County Schools Facility Funding Information
This page is designed to provide school staff and the Powell County community with information on facility funding. School districts in Kentucky are funded through both local tax revenue and state tax revenue. When a community contributes tax revenue by putting in a nickel of additional tax revenue, the state contributes funding through the equalization process. In Powell County, for every 5 cents of revenue generated locally, the state puts in approximately 9 cents. This page will provide short factual pieces of information on how this process works and what it means for the Powell County students and community as a whole.
The attached document provides information on what a nickel tax is. This is provided by the Kentucky Department of Education and shows the different types of nickel equalization as well as which counties have passed nickels to help with facility funding. This was updated March of 2024: Nickel Facts
This document at the following link is the tax presentation that was given to the community at a public Board meeting and a Public Forum. There are links within the document for more detailed information. Tax Presentation
